The series continues from the Punisher: Red Band storyline and follows Castle after freeing himself from Wilson Fisk’s control. During that arc, Fisk implanted a device in Castle’s head that removed his free will and memories, effectively turning him into a controlled weapon. Castle ultimately removed the implant himself in an act of defiance.
In the opening issue, Castle confronts the consequences of his decision directly. He suffers severe, debilitating head pain, collapses in the street, and his body effectively turns against him. The narrative confirms that removing the device caused lasting physical damage that now limits his ability to operate.
The story also reintroduces Billy Russo, known as Jigsaw, who survived a prior impalement through the neck. After Castle removed Kingpin and Tombstone from power, Jigsaw steps in to fill the vacuum in New York’s organized crime. The final pages show that Jigsaw plans to kill Castle to secure his rise.
Punisher #1 is currently available from Marvel Comics.
