NEW YORK − President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Feb. 26 planned to meet in Washington, DC, according to news reports.
Details of the meeting hadn’t been listed on either the White House or New York City Hall public schedules. USA TODAY has reached out to City Hall and the White House for comment.
The New York Post, citing anonymous sources, first reported on the planned meeting, citing Mamdani’s appearance on a Delta flight the morning of Feb. 26. The New York Times, citing three anonymous sources familiar with Mamdani’s plans, reported the mayor had made an unannounced trip to Washington.
Mamdani’s public schedule, released late Feb. 25, didn’t include any public events. Mamdani wasn’t on the White House’s official schedule.
At his Feb. 24 State of the Union speech, Trump referenced Mamdani, a democratic socialist with whom the Republican president has had surprisingly friendly relations.
“The new communist mayor of New York City, I think he’s a nice guy, actually,” Trump said in his address to Congress. “I speak to him a lot. Bad policy, but nice guy.”
The two first met in November in a chummy Oval Office meeting.
This is a developing story.
