McMaster Engineering’s Visit to Hong Kong

Dean Heather Sheardown (centre) with McMaster University alumni in Hong Kong.

Dean of Engineering, Heather Sheardown recently visited Hong Kong to connect with the University’s local alumni and partners. The visit was an opportunity to catch up with the McMaster community in the Asia-Pacific region and to see firsthand how our graduates are shaping their careers abroad.

While in Hong Kong, Dean Sheardown joined a delegation of Canadian engineering deans at the Centennial Iron Ring Celebration  marking 100 years of the engineering obligation. Sharing a panel on professional ethics, the Dean spoke about the values that guide the profession as it moves forward. The trip also included a visit to the 12th TransPacific Entrepreneurial Conference to discuss opportunities for continued Canadian and Hong Kong economic collaboration and prepare students for global opportunities in engineering. These conversations highlighted a shared interest in helping professionals feel ready for a workplace that is constantly changing.

A highlight of the trip was a brunch that brought together 20 alumni from across the city, working in sectors like aerospace, tech, and infrastructure. The Dean also visited AsiaSat with alumnus Roger Tong and met with Aiden Wong, a current Mechanical Engineering co-op student gaining experience at CLP Power Hong Kong. These interactions offered insight into the meaningful work McMaster students and graduates are doing internationally as well as the lasting impact of their time at McMaster.

This visit marks a thoughtful step in McMaster’s effort to stay connected with the Hong Kong community and to support new opportunities for students to learn and work globally.
