The Immigration Department said about 634,000 visitors entered the city on the first three days of the Lunar New Year holiday.

A legislator representing the retail sector said locals contributed to more than 60 percent of the sector's total revenue.

A large crowd of visitors gathered outside the Old Yau Ma Tei Police Station on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.

The Edwardian architecture, also a Grade-2 historic building, has become a tourist landmark in Hong Kong.

Many visitors came from the mainland, and taking pictures with the building is a must, while others queued for an exhibition, "A Cinematic Journey," to view iconic scenes of Hong Kong police and crime films inside the once-operating station.

Several tourists, who would stay in the city for four to seven days, shared their travelling experience so far.

Helen, a tourist from Chengdu said "I (went) to shopping and (bought) some LEGO and some car models I like with my mum.

And (I ate) some food; the local specials. I truly like Hong Kong's movies, so I travelled to Hong Kong."

Lawrence, a tourist from Dalian said ("A) very good, modern city. There are a lot of people here; more people than Dalian."

When asked about the differences between spending the Lunar New Year in Hong Kong and in their hometowns, some mainlanders said Hong Kong streets have a better festive atmosphere.

The Immigration Department said about 634,000 visitors entered Hong Kong over the previous three days.

Speaking on the overall local retail performance, a retail sector legislator said the Lunar New Year events, including the fireworks display, helped draw customers.

He noted that the jewellery sector had recorded a single digit year-on-year revenue increase.

Shiu Ka-Fai, LegCo, Wholesale & Retail, Liberal Party, said: "More than 60 percent were the local people who were spending. They would take up about 30 or 40 percent for the total revenue for the retail sector."

Shiu said retailers could offer more promotions to customers over the festive period.
