At about 7:33 a.m. two homeowners called 911 to ask for help after an armed suspect broke into the home in the 800-block of North Chestnut Avenue, police said.
The victims were able to hide in a bedroom and were rescued by officers, police said. Both were unharmed.
At one point, a gunshot was heard inside the house, leading to a standoff that lasted hours where ABC7 crews heard several uses of flash bangs or similar chemical agents used by police.
Police said the armed suspect was visible inside the house.
ABC7 was on the scene as police took a man into custody. Video showed the the final moments of the standoff as police took a man away in handcuffs. ABC7 has blurred the man’s face as he has not been charged with a crime yet.
Nearby schools were placed on a soft lockdown as a precaution.
The scene was clear Thursday evening after ABC7 crews saw multiple agencies and SWAT teams there all day.
Neighbors living on the block were not allowed onto the street… as they explain the chaos they witnessed here today.
“When I got here and saw the commotion I didn’t hear the forearm but I heard three flashbangs get thrown inside the house through the upper windows,” resident Jack Murray said. “This is very unlike Arlington Heights, that’s for sure. It’s not something we see everyday.”
Local schools were also placed on a soft lockdown just as a precaution but we are told by the nearby districts that classes went on as normal.
