Samoa Celebrates Spring Festival: a Cherished Traditional Holiday in China

By: Leota Marc Membrere, 16 February 2026, Samoa Celebrates Spring Festival.  China had welcomed the Year of the Horse with the celebration of the Spring Festival in Samoa, the most cherished traditional holiday in Chinese traditions.

The celebrations were held at the Chinese Embassy in Samoa on Friday and was attended by Council of Deputies, Deputy Prime Minister Toelupe Maoiautele Poumulinuku Onesemo, Cabinet Ministers, and Members of the Diplomatic Corps.

In his address, the Ambassador of China to Samoa His Excellency Fei Mingxing said it was also a milestone year in China-Samoa relations as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

“President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang exchanged congratulatory messages with Samoa’s Head of State, Afioga Tuimalealiifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, and Prime Minister Hon. La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, respectively, charting a forward-looking path for bilateral cooperation,” Ambassador Fei says.

He added that the mutual visa exemption agreement between Samoa and China deepens people-to-people ties.

China has provided nearly 200 training opportunities for Samoan officials and professionals.

Close to 30 Samoan students recently departed for studies in China under Chinese Scholarships, and China had stood firmly with Samoa in addressing the power outage and the dengue fever outbreak.

“In November, the Chinese Embassy and the Samoan Government jointly hosted a reception to mark the golden jubilee of our diplomatic relations—culminating a year of celebration and heralding an even brighter future together,” he says.

Ambassador Fei stated that this year also ushers in the second half-century of China-Samoa diplomatic relations, and China will continue to uphold the principle of the “Four Full Respects”.

That is a committment to working closely with the Samoan government and people to carry forward our time-honored friendship, deepen practical cooperation, and deliver ever greater benefits to our two peoples.

Speaking on behalf of the Government of Samoa, Deputy Prime Minister Toelupe acknowledged Samoa’s diplomatic ties with China and wished everyone a Happy Spring Festival.
