One of Searchlight Pictures’ underrated sports movies from 2023 has finally found a new streaming home. This served as Academy Award-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi‘s first directorial project after directing 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
What Taika Waititi movie is now available on Prime Video?
As of today, Waititi’s sports comedy movie Next Goal Wins is available to stream on Prime Video. Despite garnering mixed reviews from critics, the film was still received well by moviegoers. It currently holds a Popcornmeter score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The film follows the infamously terrible American Samoa soccer team, known for a brutal 2001 FIFA match they lost 31-0. With the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen, hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this humorous and heartfelt underdog story,” reads the synopsis.
Next Goal Wins was directed and produced by Waititi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Iain Morris, based on the 2014 British documentary from Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. The movie starred Michael Fassbender, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, Frankie Adams, Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi, Semu Filipo, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, Rhys Darby, Angus Sampson, and more. It was produced by Garrett Basch of Film Rites and Jonathan Cavendish of Imaginarium Productions, Mike Brett, and Steve Jamison.
Since the 2023 movie, Waititi hasn’t directed a feature-length movie yet. One of his next projects will be the sci-fi dystopian movie Klara and the Sun, with Jenna Ortega attached to lead. At the moment, the acclaimed filmmaker is also developing an untitled Star Wars movie. Last November 2025, it was also revealed that Waititi is developing a new comedy series for Hulu titled Last Look, which centers around a luxury fashion house.
