From spy thrillers to procedural dramas to supernatural horror, mystery spans a wide range of genres. What keeps us coming back, though, are the questions and the simple satisfaction of piecing together clues and solving the puzzle before the story reveals itself. If you’re looking for mystery series to watch, here are the best mystery series on Prime Video.
What are the best mystery series on Prime Video?
We’ve narrowed it down to five series we return to time and time again. Some are obvious favorites, while others have been quietly waiting for a new audience.
The Night Manager (2016)
We’ve been waiting far too long for season 2. Nearly ten years after the first, it’s finally here. It’s well worth the wait, though, in this gripping mystery spy thriller that puts Tom Hiddleston (one of our favorites) front and center. Based on John le Carré’s novel of the same name, the series follows Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), a luxury hotel night manager in Cairo and former British soldier, who is asked to assist in spying on an international businessman and arms dealer, Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie).
Columbo (1968)
We’d hate to say this is a “watch-with-your-parents” show, but we also think dad would like it. Still, it’s also just as rewarding to watch alone, especially if you’re a classics fan. In any case, this one is overlooked in favor of flashier, newer series, but you’d be missing out if you skipped it. Columbo is your classic whodunnit crime show, but it brilliantly plays with dramatic irony: the audience sees the crime at the start of each episode and watches the detective piece it together. Technically speaking, this format is called a “howcatchem” — bet you learned something new there! In terms of tone, Columbo is a quirkishly funny comedy mixed with classic detective drama. Peter Falk stars as this iconic LA police detective. This timeless hit is absolutely worth a watch.
Person of Interest (2011)
If you’re looking for a mystery procedural with plenty of episodes to work your way through, Person of Interest is an obvious go-to. Jim Caviezel plays former CIA agent Reese, who, alongside a software genius Finch (Michael Emerson), teams up to fight crime. Using Finch’s program, the two begin tracking down criminals before crimes occur. A crime procedural that adds technology (and the ethical questions around that technology), Person of Interest goes beyond the obvious mystery writing.
Bosch (2014)
Based on Michael Connelly’s novels, Bosch follows LAPD detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) as he investigates complex cases in Los Angeles. While this former special forces officer is known for his relentless pursuit of justice and moral code, Bosch also navigates the challenges of police bureaucracy, criminal conspiracies, and, as any good drama series would have it, personal demons. This series is exceptionally entertaining and good for more than one watch, though you may not have to, considering there’s also a prequel on the way. You’ve got 7 seasons to keep you busy with this one, and if you like it enough, there are a few spin-offs you can watch now. The most recent, Ballard, has an 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Devil’s Hour (2022)
Let’s take things to the supernatural world with this horror thriller, The Devil’s Hour. The ambitious six-part drama from Tom Moran follows social worker Lucy Chambers (Jessica Raine), who awakens every night at 3:33 AM from terrifying visions related to a serial killer. The many moving parts of this puzzle keep a grip on us, made only more terrifying by the performance from Peter Capaldi as Gideon Shephard. This series has flown under the radar, but we can safely say it is one of the best mystery series on Prime Video, no questions asked.
How we picked the best mystery series on Prime Video
Though Prime Video may not have as vast a collection as its competitors, its mystery series are more than satisfactory. We narrowed our choices to the series with the best audience feedback, and we also considered a few outliers in the category.
