Hong Kong police have arrested a man after discovering the bodies of 20 cats and a hamster, as well as other animals in poor condition, in his flat.
The force said it received a report at about 7pm on Sunday from a resident of Chau Tau Tsuen in Lok Ma Chau complaining of an odd smell.
Officers later found the carcasses inside the man’s flat, along with nine living cats, seven of which were in poor health.
The 28-year-old man, who lived in the flat, was arrested for animal cruelty after a preliminary investigation. He remains in police custody.
A criminal investigation team from the Border District is following up on the case.
According to police, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has collected all the carcasses.
