MAINZ, Germany – Bayern Munich defender Hiroki Ito netted his first goal of the German Bundesliga football season Saturday in a shock 2-1 loss to struggling Augsburg.
The Japan international gave his club a 1-0 lead when he headed in from a corner kick in the 23rd minute at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
But the defending champions were outplayed by Augsburg in the second half and were left stunned after the visitors scored twice during a six-minute span late in the contest to snap Bayern’s 27-game unbeaten streak.
The 26-year-old Ito has been a regular member of manager Vincent Kompany’s lineup since returning from an eight-month layoff with a foot injury in late November.
Bayern sit eight points clear atop the 18-team table following the upset, with Augsburg climbing to 13th.
Elsewhere in Germany, Kento Shiogai made his Bundesliga debut as a late substitute for Wolfsburg following his transfer from Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen.
The Japanese forward came off the bench for the visitors in the 84th minute of their 3-1 loss away to Mainz.
Countryman Kaishu Sano played the full 90 minutes in midfield for Mainz.
