Similar to Ethan’s case, Hollywood legend Robert De Niro lost his grandson, Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, to an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2023. The Blast reported that the 19-year-old died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine, and cocaine.
The tragic incident sparked a police investigation leading to the arrest of a woman identified as Sofia H. Markas, believed to be the person responsible for selling Leandro the fentanyl-laced drugs he had consumed. Two years later, five more people were arrested in connection with the fentanyl case.
The five men were reportedly facing charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. They were accused of targeting young adults and teens through social media and selling fentanyl and other drugs across New York City and parts of Long Island. Their actions allegedly caused multiple deaths, including three teenagers.

In 2024, cartels pushing fentanyl in the US attempted to reach younger audiences using the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. The Blast reported that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued a warning to citizens on X after uncovering a diabolical scheme.
Cartels reportedly tried to use Travis Kelce’s popularity to sell fentanyl-laced drugs by creating bags with the athlete’s name and image. The DEA explained that it discovered the plot after seizing multiple fentanyl bags on the East Coast.
“Drug traffickers will even take advantage of #SBLVIII hype to appeal to new customers,” the DEA warned. They stressed that it was more crucial than ever to spread the #OnePillCanKill message as they suspected the bags they seized were a combination of fentanyl, meth, and cocaine.

The same year cartels tried pushing fentanyl with Kelce’s name and image, singer Jelly Roll broke his silence on the growing drug epidemic. The Blast shared that he expressed his fear for the future, noting he did not want his children growing up in a dark web of synthetic opioid drugs.
Jelly Roll believed there was no drug as dangerous as fentanyl, stating that small amounts of the synthetic opioid were being mixed into other substances and creating deadly combinations. He could not dare imagine his kids falling prey to such fentanyl horrors.
“How many more people does [fentanyl] have to kill a day before we start to care, if the number right now is close to 200? I just think it’s time to speak about it,” Jelly Roll stressed. “It scares me for my daughter. It scares me for my son. It scares me for this next generation.”
