Air India updates its pet policy; passengers can now travel with their favourite four-legged companion | Travel

Pet animals are often the panacea that melts away our stress and anxiety. However, they become a headache when we are planning a long trip or a dream holiday. Most pet parents worry about their pet’s safety and comfort, even when they make alternate arrangements. They might even consider taking their pets along with them to avoid the stress and discomfort. Now, Air India has updated its pet policy, allowing pets to travel with their owners on select flights.

Air India’s ‘Paws on Board’ program lets passengers take their furry companions along with them to various global destinations. The airline has simplified the guidelines, allowing fliers to book tickets for their pets as well. As per the latest guidelines, pets up to 10 kg can be taken in the cabin on selected economy-class flights. This facility is available in both domestic and international flights.

Earlier, applications had to be submitted at least 72 hours before travel. However, now, it has been reduced to 48 hours. Meanwhile, the booking would be confirmed only after the necessary documents and certificates are checked and verified.

80 destinations
Passengers can take their pet animals to over 80 destinations in India and around the world. This includes countries in Asia, East Asia, Europe and North America. The aircraft that allows pet animals would have two cabins. Meanwhile, the animal must be at least eight weeks old and shouldn’t be pregnant, sedated, or suffering from severe disease.

Pets would be allowed in the last row of economy class seats or near the aisle. Passengers are not allowed to take their pets out of their cages or kennels while flying. Besides, the guidelines will change depending on the rules and regulations of the countries they are flying to.

Guidelines about cages
The airline company has issued specific guidelines about the cages, too. The cages or kennels must be 17 x 10 x 9 inches, leakproof, securely fastened, and ventilated on three sides. Animals that weigh between 10 to 32 kg, including the cage, must be booked separately as checked baggage.

Pets that weigh more than 10 kilos should be transported only in IATA-certified crates. These animals, including their cages, would be handled as part of Air India’s cargo services. However, it must be noted that such heavy animals are not allowed to fly on many long-distance routes.

Flight charges
Air India charges a fixed fee with no fluctuations to take your furry companions along on flights. It would cost Rs 7500 for domestic flights, while short-distance international flights may cost up to 140 dollars (Rs 12,600). The charges for taking your pets on long-distance international flights are $160 (Rs 14,400). The charges would change if the animals were flown as checked baggage. It costs Rs 16,000 on domestic routes and $ 350 (Rs 31,500) on international flights.

Bookings for pets could be made via Air India’s customer support or the booking offices. Passengers should try to book their tickets at least 48 hours before their travel. Vaccination certificates and other documents should be submitted. Meanwhile, many pet lovers are relieved by Air India’s Paws on Board program and its revised guidelines.
