President Donald Trump’s health warrants a congressional investigation, the House’s top Democrat told a liberal podcaster in an interview posted Friday.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., claimed House Republicans have abdicated their oversight responsibilities of the Trump administration while deeply scrutinizing former President Joe Biden.
“I think it’s something that James Comer needs to answer for,” Jeffries told liberal podcaster Aaron Parnas in an interview, referring to the Republican congressman from Kentucky who heads the House Oversight Committee.
“At the end of the day … he’s still obsessed with Joe Biden, right? Meanwhile, the president has failed to deliver on every single promise that he made to make life more affordable, seems to be checked out as it relates to the day-to-day engaging in the people’s business. And yet, we hear nothing but crickets from James Comer.”
Jeffries’ comments came a day after the Wall Street Journal published a story based on interviews with Trump where the president said he takes more aspirin that his doctors recommend, gave up wearing compression socks for his swollen legs because they were uncomfortable and denied falling asleep at meetings.
Trump responded to the story on Friday, claiming to be “in perfect health.”
Jeffries, who could become House speaker if Democrats take control of the lower chamber following the 2026 midterm elections, said the matter is too urgent to wait for that possibility.
“I don’t believe that this is something that should wait until the American people give Democrats the majority in the aftermath of the November election later on this year,” Jeffries said.
“I think that it’s something that James Comer, if he’s actually being honest about Congress being a separate and coequal branch of government – we don’t work for Donald Trump. We don’t work for JD Vance. We don’t work for their billionaire donors,“ he said. ”We work for the American people, and Congress, in its role as a separate coequal branch of government, should make sure that the administration comes clean as it relates to the president’s ability to continue to do the job at the level that the American people deserve.”
