Holiday travel surge in hong kong

As Hong Kong prepares for the Christmas and New Year holidays, the city is witnessing a significant boost in tourism numbers, with a record-breaking surge of over 1.15 million arrivals recorded in just two days between December 20 and 21, 2025. This increase signals renewed optimism in the local hospitality sector and a strong recovery from previous slowdowns. The festive period is attracting visitors from across Asia and beyond, including popular destinations like Australia, Singapore, and the United States, with hotels and tourist attractions brimming with excited travelers. Local tourism officials are forecasting that this holiday season will mark another year of recovery, with robust growth in arrivals and an overall positive outlook for the remainder of the year.

Surge in Arrivals Boosts Tourism and Hospitality Sectors

The Immigration Department reported an impressive spike in visitor arrivals, with the total for December 20-21 hitting over 1.15 million, a clear indication that the Christmas season is off to a successful start. Notably, Saturday, December 20, recorded a high of 48,000 overseas arrivals—the highest one-day number this year—highlighting Hong Kong’s continued appeal as a prime destination for leisure and family travel.

This surge has had a direct and positive impact on the hospitality industry. Local hotels have seen a substantial rise in occupancy rates, with projections indicating that some venues will exceed 90% occupancy during the festive period. Areas like Causeway Bay, a bustling shopping district, and Wong Chuk Hang, which is located near popular tourist spots such as Ocean Park, are expected to see significant activity, outpacing last year’s figures.

Hotel Operators See Increased Demand

Nina Hospitality, one of the city’s prominent hotel operators, has reported that occupancy rates at its properties are expected to soar, particularly at locations in high-demand areas like Causeway Bay and Wong Chuk Hang. According to the commercial manager, the demand for hotel rooms is predominantly being driven by mainland Chinese visitors, though an influx of international travelers from Australia, the United States, and Singapore is also noted. The rise in room rates is another key indicator of the growing demand, with prices expected to increase during this period.

Despite a tragic incident—a fire in Tai Po—which might affect travelers’ decisions to visit, the general mood in the tourism sector remains optimistic. Hotel operators are hopeful for a repeat of last year’s strong performance, during which Christmas and New Year periods marked a successful holiday season.

New Year Celebrations and Festivities Stir Tourist Interest

The vibrant atmosphere surrounding Hong Kong’s holiday celebrations is an undeniable draw for tourists. Visitors are flocking to iconic destinations like Tsim Sha Tsui and enjoying the spectacular displays at popular Christmas markets, making the most of the mild winter temperatures. Events like the AIA Carnival, which began on December 22, 2025, add to the festive mood, making the city an even more attractive destination for international visitors.

Local tourism experts anticipate that the final weekend of the year, leading up to New Year’s Eve, will be another peak period for arrivals. As Hong Kong continues to implement various tourism campaigns and collaborate with the Hong Kong Tourism Board, these efforts are expected to yield positive results in the coming days.

Travel Tips for Tourists Visiting Hong Kong During the Holidays

If you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong this holiday season, here are some essential tips to make the most of your visit:

  1. Book Accommodations Early: Due to the surge in arrivals, hotel rooms can fill up quickly. Booking your stay in advance will help secure the best rates and availability.
  2. Explore the Christmas Markets: Don’t miss the iconic Christmas markets and the dazzling lights along Tsim Sha Tsui and other bustling districts.
  3. Stay Updated on Events: Check local listings for events like the AIA Carnival and other festivities that are perfect for family enjoyment.
  4. Weather Preparations: Hong Kong’s mild winter is a perfect time to explore the city on foot, but packing light, layered clothing is recommended for a comfortable experience.
  5. Transportation: Consider using public transportation like the MTR and ferries to avoid traffic congestion, especially during peak holiday hours.

A Bright Future for Hong Kong’s Tourism

With a consistent rise in visitor arrivals during this holiday period, Hong Kong is set to continue its recovery throughout the year. The city’s tourism sector is not only benefiting from holiday travel but also from the ongoing initiatives by the government and industry stakeholders to promote the city as a premier travel destination. As the year progresses, Hong Kong remains one of the most popular choices for both regional and international tourists, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, exciting events, and world-class attractions.
