Thanksgiving Day 2025 is Thursday, Nov. 27, and while some restaurants, grocery stores and retailers are open, the federal holiday closes banks and post offices, including the stock market. On Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday, many businesses will open including the stock market, albeit partially.
Thanksgiving was established as the fourth Thursday in November in 1941 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and while the holiday can be as early as Nov. 22 and as late as Nov. 28, it’ll always be a federal holiday, closing down governmental offices, schools, and delivery services like UPS and FedEx.

Thanksgiving is a stock market holiday, meaning Nasdaq and NYSE are closed. Both markets open business as usual on Friday, Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving, but close early, at 1 p.m. ET — a few hours earlier than the usual 4 p.m. closing auction (bell).

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are open for trading hours Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. ET to 4 p.m. ET. The market closes on the weekends and on 10 holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day (NYSE calls it Washington’s Birthday), Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

The U.S. bond market is closed on Thanksgiving 2025, Nov. 27, 2025. The day after Thanksgiving, which is Black Friday (Nov. 28), bond markets will close at 2 p.m. ET for a “partial holiday.” Bond markets typically trade from 8 a.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET.
Commodity futures markets, like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), operate on modified schedules between Nov. 27-29 (Thanksgiving and Black Friday). Check the schedules as some commodities may observe early closures.
