‘Test the water’ – Premier League giants told to make stunning Harry Kane swoop this summer over Alexander Isak

Liverpool should explore the idea of signing Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane.

That’s the view of former Rangers and Scotland striker Ally McCoist who believes the England captain would add a plethora of goals to the Reds’ frontline.

Kane has been in sensational form for the Bundesliga leaders again this season and his goal in Saturday’s 3-2 win over St. Pauli was his 77th strike in just 83 games since arriving in August 2023.

Whilst Kane continues to take German football by storm, links with a return to English football continue to surface with the star still capable of netting the 48 goals needed to overtake Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record of 260.

European football expert and Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard has kept close tabs on Kane’s time in Bavaria and claims the striker is settled in Germany and learning the language.

He also claims that some are overestimating the importance of eclipsing Shearer’s record and that he expects the 31-year-old to stay in the Bundesliga.

However, McCoist is of a differing stance and believes Kane could still have one more big move in him, with Liverpool the ideal suitor.

“If I was Liverpool, I’d test the water with Harry Kane,” McCoist told talkSPORT. “Clearly Kevin Hatchard doesn’t think it will happen at all because he thinks he will stay.

“I think Harry Kane would score a phenomenal amount of goals in that Liverpool team,” he added. “He’s not going to come back to Arsenal, He’s not going to City because of [Erling] Haaland.

“If he was going to come back to anybody, I could see him at Liverpool.”

Asked if he could see Kane playing in a Manchester United shirt, McCoist said: “Not this Manchester United squad just because of where they are.

“It’s amazing we’re even saying that players would think twice about coming to Manchester United just because of where the club is at this moment in time.

“Harry Kane is not going to leave a team that is in the Champions League every season to come to a team that might not be in Europe.”

Kane has two years to run on his existing deal at the Allianz Arena, making another big move unlikely when his contract ends just weeks before his 34th birthday.

With Kane still at the peak of his powers, McCoist believes this summer could be the right time to test Bayern and Kane’s resolve ahead of a potential summer move.

“I thought it was a little bit early for Kev to shoot it down because I don’t think there’s another big move at the end of his contract, I might be wrong,” McCoist said.

Liverpool are expected to shake up their attacking options this summer with the futures of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa all unclear.

So too is the future of Mohamed Salah whose contract expires in June although recent signs are pointing to a contract extension.

Alexander Isak is a reported target for Arne Slot this summer, but would likely cost a world record fee from Newcastle.

Bayern are yet to show any signs that they are ready to cash in on Kane as the striker closes in on the Bundesliga title and the first major trophy of his career.

The German giants paid a Bundesliga record fee of £86.4million for Kane’s services following the abrupt exit of star striker Robert Lewandowski.

Kane has more than matched the Poland striker for goals and impact in his short time at the club and has fired Bayern to the cusp of domestic glory and a Champions League quarter-final clash against Inter next week.

“He is a perfect fit for us and the club’s DNA in terms of both football and character,” said Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen after tying the England skipper down to a four-year deal.

“World-class centre forwards have always been an important factor when FC Bayern has celebrated its greatest triumphs, and we’re convinced that Harry Kane will continue this success story

“Our fans can look forward to one of the best goal scorers of our time.”

And Kane has lived up to that billing with a glut of impressive performances in the famous red and white shirt.
