How to Move Your Pets Overseas

Every country has different requirements for pet importation, so it’s crucial to research the specific rules of your destination well in advance.

If you’re taking your pet abroad, first and foremost, make sure to find out if your destination country requires a lengthy quarantine. This could last up to six months in some instances. The problem is not only the high cost of quarantine but also the fact that your pet won’t be living with you during that time.

Most countries require a health certificate issued by a veterinarian, along with proof of vaccinations. Depending on your destination, additional documents may be required, such as:

  • APHIS Form 7001 (U.S. International Health Certificate for certain countries)

  • EU Pet Passport for entry into European Union countries, which includes proof of rabies vaccination

  • Microchipping (mandatory in many regions to link pets to health records, with ISO-compliant 15-digit microchips being the international standard)

Failure to meet these requirements could result in quarantine, denial of entry, or even return to the country of origin—so double-check all regulations before travel.

Finally, bear in mind that regulations and requirements may change at any time, so it is important that you check for the most current rules before traveling abroad with your pet.

Bringing a pet abroad can be costly, with expenses varying depending on destination, airline, and pet size. Some key costs include:

  • Airline fees (as carry-on, checked baggage, or cargo)

  • Health certificates & vaccinations

  • Microchipping & documentation

  • Travel crate (IATA-compliant carrier)

Many airlines also charge excess baggage fees based on the pet’s weight and size. It’s advisable to get detailed cost estimates from the airline well in advance.

Policies vary by airline, so it’s essential to check their specific rules and book well in advance, as some airlines limit the number of pets per flight. Consider the following:

  • Temperature restrictions: Pets often cannot fly if temperatures exceed 85 F or drop below 20 F.

  • Breed restrictions: Snub-nosed breeds like bulldogs and Persian cats may not be allowed due to breathing issues.

  • Direct flights: Reduce stress and risks associated with layovers and cargo holds.

  • Pet-friendly programs: Some airlines offer extra perks, such as climate-controlled cargo areas or frequent flyer programs for pets.

Ensuring your pet is comfortable and safe during transit is key. Here are some practical tips:

  • Use an airline-approved travel crate that allows enough space to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

  • Introduce your pet to the crate weeks before travel to reduce stress.

  • Label the crate with your contact information and your destination address.

  • Avoid sedation, as it can increase health risks at high altitudes.

  • Provide frozen water in a spill-proof dish so it melts gradually during the journey.

  • Feed your pet four hours before travel to prevent motion sickness.

  • Exercise your pet before the flight to help them relax during the journey.

Once you arrive in your new country, having your paperwork ready will help smooth customs clearance. When you reach your new home:

  • Give your pet time to adjust to their new surroundings.

  • Ensure they are microchipped and registered locally.

  • Locate the nearest veterinarian for follow-up health checks.

  • Watch for signs of stress or illness and provide plenty of comfort and reassurance.
