Starting April 2, 2025, most travellers visiting the United Kingdom will be required to obtain UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). As per the reports, those from visa-exempt European countries, including EU citizens, will need to follow this process, which has been brought into place to enhance border security and streamline entry processes. Read on to find out all the details.
Who needs an ETA?
Citizens of nations that now have visa-free travel to the UK are required to have the ETA. All of the EU’s member states are included in this, along with other European countries including Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland. Irish nationals and UK residents are notable exceptions to this rule.
Application process
Applying for an ETA is straightforward and can be done through two primary methods:
The UK ETA Mobile App lets candidates scan their passport, snap a selfie, and respond to a few questions. You can download the apps from App Store and Google Play store, after which one needs to follow the process, which is simple and quick.
UK Government website: Alternatively, travelers can apply online by providing personal details, passport information, and a recent photograph.
The application fee is £10, payable via credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Each traveler, including children and infants, must have their own ETA.

Validity and processing time
Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It permits multiple visits to the UK, with each stay lasting up to six months. Most applicants receive a decision within three working days, though it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your travel date.
Exemptions
Certain individuals are exempt from obtaining an ETA:
Irish citizens: Due to the Common Travel Area agreement, Irish nationals do not require an ETA to enter the UK.
UK residents: Those holding valid UK visas or residency permits are also exempt.
Transit passengers: Travelers transiting through the UK without passing through border control may not need an ETA.

Purpose of the ETA
In an attempt to improve border security and better control immigration, the UK has brought this change, which enables officials to check passengers prior to their arrival. This will help to flag those suspicious people beforehand.
Key points to remember
Mandatory from April 2, 2025: Do note that you apply for an ETA before this date if you plan to visit the UK.
£10 Fee: The application cost is nominal and covers multiple entries over two years.
Individual applications: Each traveler needs their own ETA, regardless of age.
Apply in advance: Although the processing won’t take that long, it’s advised that you apply well before your intended travel date to avoid any potential delays.
