The Place Located along Hong Kong Street, I checked out Shunsui for a Japanese omakase meal recently, a concept from the Shunsui Group that was formed from the merger of Kyuu by Shunsui and Kappo Shunsui (six-time Michelin Plate awardee between 2018-2024). The interior of Shunsui is a u-shaped counter seating where every diner gets a view of the open kitchen which provides a close interaction between the chef and diners.

It is Kappo-style Japanese cuisine where you can expect seasonal ingredients and dishes by Chef Kazu Oyama.

The Food There are 3 dinner omakase courses; the Kacho course (S$129++) which comes with a variety of sushi as well as sashimi, cooked dishes, rice dishes and desserts; Fuga course (S$179++) and the Shunsui course (S$229++).

I had their Fuga course and here is what to expect:
Appetiser – Monaka (Rice Puff) Unagi (Eel), Nasu tempura (Deep fried Eggplant), Uni (Sea Urchin)

Soup – Grilled Mackerel, Spinach, Shimeji Mushroom, Clear soup

Sashimi – Today’s Sashimi, Pressed Sushi, Steamed Oyster

I had a mix of the charcoal grilled Spanish mackerel, freshly sliced Amberjack, Chutoro, Sea Bream, as well as Uni (Sea Urchin) sashimi.

Warm Dish – Deep fried Ankou (Monk fish) and Eblimo (Shrimp Shaped Potato), Grounded long cabbage sauce Gyojya ninniku (Alpine leek, mountain vegetable)

Sushi
Next up is a series of Nigiris.
Hirame (Flounder)

Hamachi (Yellow tail)

Kinki (Rockfish)

Hotate (Scallop)

Honmaguro Otoro (Bluefin Tuna Fatty Belly)

Negitoro (Minced tuna)

Main – A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Beef Sirloin, Sesame Soy sauce, Tumip, Fava beans, Kumquat, Ginger flower

Rice
This is the fun part of the meal where the chef serves the overflowing Ikura (Salmon Roe) Rice where the ikura is poured over the rice until you say stop.

Served alongside Nameko Mushroom Miso Soup.
Dessert
Two desserts are served where I first had the Homemade Red bean Ice Cream made ala minute by using liquid nitrogen. This is delicious and fresh.

The last dessert to conclude the meal is the Macha mizuyoukan (Macha sweet beans jelly).

Rants Nothing in particular.
Will I Return Again? If you are looking for a decent and good value Japanese omakase meal, then Shunsui fits the bill. The dining ambience is also very relaxed, and the chefs are more than happy if you are taking pictures of videos.
