2 High-Octane Jason Statham Action Sequels Emerge as Streaming Hits

Two Jason Statham action movies have seen a resurgence on streaming platforms. Both titles are from the same series, and despite being released over a decade ago, they have emerged as streaming hits this week.

The Mechanic ranks high on Paramount+ movie charts

According to FlixPatrol’s data for May 13, 2026, The Mechanic is #5 on Paramount+’s Top 10 movies in the United States. Based on the report, it has been in the Top 10 for over a week, though it peaked at #4 in the last few days. Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick is leading the charts.

Directed by Simon West, The Mechanic is a remake of the 1972 movie of the same name. The story centers on Arthur Bishop, a highly skilled assassin who stages murders to make them look like accidents. After killing his mentor, Harry, Arthur takes Harry’s son, Steve, under his wing. As Steve learns the skills of assassination, the pair carries out dangerous missions. But their relationship deteriorates when Steve learns the truth behind his father’s death.

Released on January 28, 2011, the movie ended its theatrical run with a global haul of $76.3 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 54% Tomatometer score and 51% Popcornmeter score. A sequel arrived five years later, which is currently outperforming the original on Netflix.

Mechanic: Resurrection is dominating on Netflix overseas

As of May 13, Mechanic: Resurrection is #8 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies (via FlixPatrol). Notably, this ranking showcases global streaming performance and does not represent viewership in the United States. Jason Statham’s sequel is not available to stream on Netflix in the United States, but it is available to stream on Peacock.

Surprisingly, Mechanic: Resurrection is performing well among new releases, including Michael B. Jordan’s Swapped, Lewis Pullman’s Remarkably Bright Creatures, and Charlize Theron’s Apex.

Dennis Gansel helms the sequel. The story once again follows Arthur Bishop, now living a quiet life after faking his own death at the end of the first one. However, he is forced back into his old life after his girlfriend is kidnapped to make him take on a seemingly impossible contract.

The movie debuted in theaters on August 22, 2016, and became a bigger commercial success than its predecessor. Made on a reported $40 million budget, it went on to earn $125.7 million globally. Critically, however, it received lower ratings. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a Tomatometer score of 30% and a Popcornmeter score of 40%.
