UK to Enforce ETA Requirement from February 2026

Newcastle, United Kingdom

Starting February 25, 2026, travellers visiting the UK without a visa will need to hold a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding. The UK government is tightening controls on this pre-travel requirement to enhance border security and streamline arrivals.

What is an ETA?

An ETA is a digital entry clearance—essentially a travel permission—that applies to visitors who currently don’t need a visa and don’t have UK immigration status. It doesn’t replace a visa but instead serves as a pre-screening tool for eligible nationals.

Who needs one?

If you’re travelling to the UK for a short stay, you don’t already have a visa, and you aren’t a UK or Irish citizen, chances are you’ll need an ETA. Some categories of travellers—such as those already holding a visa or individuals exempt from immigration control—won’t be affected.

What changes from February?

As of 25 February 2026, airlines and other carriers will be required to verify that all ETA-eligible travellers have one before boarding. Without a valid ETA, travellers will be denied boarding or refused entry at the UK border.

Applying for an ETA

The application process is digital and straightforward. Travellers can apply through the UK ETA app using the passport they intend to travel with. Since the ETA is electronically linked to the passport, any discrepancies could cause delays.

  • Cost: £16
  • Processing time: Apply at least three working days in advance
  • Support available via: UK ETA webchat (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm UK time) or webform (outside hours)

Preparing Your Business

With enforcement approaching, now is the time for employers to review travel policies and support employees who may be affected. Business travel teams should ensure staff understand when and why an ETA is needed and have clear internal processes in place—ideally before travel is even booked.

Establishing a checklist for ETA requirements and integrating it into your travel workflow can prevent last-minute complications. Missed ETAs mean missed flights, increased costs, and avoidable disruption.

Resources are Available

The UK Home Office offers an updated ETA Partner Pack that includes website content, social media materials, explainer videos, and factsheets. These materials are also translated into multiple languages, making it easier to communicate with global travellers.

Information Sessions

To support awareness and compliance, the Home Office will host weekly ETA enforcement briefings from December 2025 through February 2026. These sessions will provide updates and answer practical questions about enforcement.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Mandatory ETA enforcement begins 25 February 2026
  • No boarding without ETA
  • Apply early to avoid disruption
