China firmly opposes the UK’s erroneous rhetoric in UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s speech, which hyped up the “China threat” and made groundless accusations against China and interfered in China’s internal affairs, a spokesperson from Chinese Embassy in the UK said after Starmer made remarks warning China poses security threats but urging deeper business ties, along with remarks related to Hong Kong and other issues.
On Monday, Starmer delivered a foreign policy speech at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London, stating that the US, the EU and China are the three major powers in today’s world, and that the current lack of engagement between the UK and China “cannot continue.”
He said the UK needs to step up exchanges with China and pursue trade and cooperation. At the same time, he claimed that China poses a “national security threat” to the UK and said London would continue to take measures in response. He also made remarks related to Hong Kong and other issues.
In response, a spokesperson from Chinese Embassy in the UK said on Tuesday that facts have repeatedly shown that China has always been a builder of world peace, contributor to global development and defender of the international order. China has the best record on peace and security among major countries. China’s development does not threaten any country; it only creates opportunities for shared development.
It must also be emphasized that Hong Kong has long since returned to China, and Hong Kong affairs are purely China’s internal affairs. The UK has neither the qualification nor the right to make irresponsible remarks or interfere, said the spokesperson.
On China-UK relations, China’s position has been consistent and clear. Only by adhering to the principles of mutual respect, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs and equality and mutual benefit can bilateral relations develop smoothly.
We urge the UK to see the situation clearly, adopt the right mindset, view China’s development in a rational and friendly manner, pursue a positive and pragmatic China policy and work with China in the same direction to bring China-UK relations back onto the track of healthy and stable development, the spokesperson noted.
