Local MP visits Southborough Primary School on UK Parliament Week

Southborough Primary School in Bromley, part of The Pioneer Academy Trust, was recently visited [Monday 24 November 2025] by local MP Peter Fortune, the MP for Bromley and Biggin Hill.

The visit was part of UK Parliament Week, an annual event which highlights what Parliament is, what it does and how to get involved.

Peter Fortune MP joined a whole school assembly where students learned about how democracy works and how all children at Southborough have a voice in their school and the local community.

Pupils also had the opportunity to ask Mr Fortune MP some great questions, including “How do you become an MP?”

One pupil, Parker, said: “It was great meeting Peter Fortune MP. It is good to know that someone is looking after our interests.”

Peter Fortune, MP for Bromley and Biggin Hill, said:

“It was a real pleasure to be invited to Southborough Primary School to be a part of their whole school assembly for Parliament Week.

“I really enjoyed being quizzed by the children on my work across Bromley and Biggin Hill and what the life of an MP is really like. Events like this are hugely important to get future generations engaged in politics and our local community.”

Melody Berthoud, Headteacher at Southborough Primary School, said:
“Thank you very much to Peter Fortune MP for helping our pupils celebrate UK Parliament Week.

“This was a brilliant opportunity for the children to learn by asking questions – their enthusiasm to learn more about politics was clear to see.”

Lee Mason-Ellis OBE, CEO at The Pioneer Academy, said:

“Thank you to Peter Fortune MP for taking the time to provide such an interactive assembly for our pupils. All the children were really engaged with this and it was an excellent way to mark UK Parliament Week.”
